I drink this a lot, and it’s one of my favorites. Make no mistake about it: the best things in life come in simple packages. There are only four ingredients in this recipe, so it’s super simple to make and low in calories.
It can be served for any occasion, whether it’s a one-on-one dinner or a large-scale corporate event.
When you’re ready to drink, add tequila to an ice cube and mix in club soda. Even though it’s lower in calories, it’s still packed with refreshing citrus flavor (and no added sugar!).
The Ingredients
All that is required for Tequila Soda is four simple ingredients.
Tequila – Tequila is a low-calorie, sugar-free, and carb-free beverage. It’s not a bad idea to drink if you’re in the mood for something alcoholic. It is gluten-free because it is made from agave (a fruit), not wheat or barley. It can be used in a variety of ways. Just be sure to look for tequila made entirely from blue agave.
Different Types of Tequila
Everything from how it’s made to how long it’s aged to whether or not it’s made entirely from agave determines the type of tequila you get. Here are the four most common types:
- Tequila Blanco – the cleanest flavor of citrus and salt.
- Tequila Joven – a little spicy and smokey with a smooth finish.
- Tequila Reposado – you’ll taste a sweet oak flavor because of the barrels it is aged in.
- Tequila Añejo – aged in oak barrels for over a year, this tequila typically has a smokey salty flavor with a caramel finish.
For this drink, I prefer to use a Blanco (also known as silver) because of its clean flavor, which complements the soda water well.
What Kind Of Soda To Mix With Tequila
Club Soda, Seltzer, or Sparkling Mineral Water are all acceptable substitutes. If you don’t have a SodaStream, you can still make your own “bubbly water” in this recipe.
Using a non-sweet mixer is the most important step. Caloric intake will rise if you drink Tonic Water, Sprite, or Seven-Up. You don’t want the extra sugar or calories from a sweet mixer, but you do want the crispness of sparkling water.
The Lime – The traditional way to serve this cocktail is with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a wedge of lime as a garnish. For a low-calorie alternative to soda water, try lime LaCroix. It’s just as refreshing.
The Grapefruit – This drink gets an extra kick from a squeeze of grapefruit. Obviously, it isn’t a necessity, but we really enjoy the flavor it provides. Where are all the grapefruits? Lemon or orange juice can also be used.
What Does Tequila Soda Taste Like?
Some cocktails have a lot of sugar, but this tequila soda is light and crisp. Lime and soda water complement Blanco tequila’s citrus notes perfectly.
