When SZA (Solana Imani Rowe) started her career, she weighed over 200 lbs. Nowadays you can’t really tell that it’s the same person. She grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey with a TV producer father and telecommunications executive mother. She wanted to be an Olympic gymnast but her dreams changed when she started doing vocals for his rapper brother’s music videos. While she may have started her career by accident, it is now clear that the young woman was meant for stardom. And with all this success SZA’s weight loss is a part of it.
What’s the story of SZA’s weight loss?
Yes, it’s true! SZA weighed in at 200 lbs or 90.7 kg when she started her career as a musical artist and even wore baggy clothes because of it – which meant fans couldn’t see the meatier side of herself. As a part of the Dove’s Girl Collective launch in 2018, she shared her story and how being 200 lbs made her feel. She even spoke about being comfortable with who you are when it comes to your body.
“It’s all about where it starts in your mind. I only wore my dad’s big t-shirts and socks on stage, no shoes, and didn’t even notice; never complained or tripped about my makeup,” SZA revealed.
The singer is passionate about being comfortable in your body, but she also believes that one should try to see his/her full potential. She speaks of this during an interview and how coming out of her comfort zone helped her grow as a person. “It was just a matter of where I was in my mind, but I did also come out of that space where I was like, I feel like I want to change. I want to be different. I want to grow. I want to learn. I think it’s one thing to be comfortable, but then it’s one thing to not see your full potential and your full picture. The standard should really come from within,” SZA said.
Though she was never forced to lose weight, ZSA found that it was a way out. She never liked the baggy clothes and 90s style, but she was always seen wearing them. Why? It turns out that’s because of her weight. In order to be a better version of herself, SZA started taking care of and working on her health. She started taking care of her teeth and face.
Due to her digestive issues, weight loss was not easy for her. but she didn’t let that stop her. SZA has been open about her weight loss journey. In a since-deleted Instagram post, she talked about the difficulties of losing weight due to genetics and the damaged digestive system. She also shared her weight loss secrets which include changes to her lifestyle, portion control, and some discipline. “I’m actually seeing some sustainable progress!! Today I faced the music and stepped on the scale to find out I’m finally 11 lbs down! From 169 – 158!,” ZSA announced. How did she do this you ask?
following her weight loss, SZA has more energy and is sleeping better. She ends the Insta post by calling out all of those ladies to not give up so easily- keep on at it. When fans found out that she had lost weight, they asked about the diet and she answered, “Really don’t know a name for it, lmao. no red meat (mostly fish ) no dairy no wheat no sugar.. high veggie ..complex carbs only (squash, avocado . sweet potato ect) hella water dassii. No crazy diet, no shakes, no cute ass “tea,” no supplements, still no gym (yet). Just being more active (light hikes n strolls etc.) LOTS uh water + doing and eating what feels right for ME and my body (less cheese less sugar). Whether I’m slim jimmy or thicker than a lil bit, it’s all a journey, and I’m in no rush from 168-152 at my own lil pace and still going.
When the musician lost weight, she told in an interview what it felt like. “When I lost weight, I didn’t want to wear baggy clothes anymore. I worked really hard not to have to wear baggy clothes. And now I just feel like it’s how I’m generally comfortable. Instead of doing just what was available, I can wear what I want, and that’s a blessing.” The singer has gone through a weight loss journey and shed over 50 lbs in the process. She achieved the results she wanted by changing her diet and lifestyle. She didn’t consume fat or calories, opted for a PescaVegan diet plus worked out but not at the gym. She lost weight by doing outdoor activities like hiking, but she also enjoyed performing Pilates.
SZA says that one should love his/her body no matter what shape it’s in. “It’s not about how they think you should be, look, feel, do, vibe, grow, or evolve. It’s about how you see yourself. How you feel you.”
